Duke Kahanamoku was a Hawaii native who went on to become a gold metalist in the 100 meter freestyle in the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm and in the 1920 Olympics in Antwerp. He is regarded as the person who popularized the modern sport of surfing. In addition, he was the first person to be inducted into both the Swimming Hall of Fame and the Surfing Hall of Fame. Also, he is a member of the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame.
